Hermitage of Santo Spirito a Majella
Cultural heritage sites
The first historical information on the hermitage of Santo Spirito a Majella dates back to 1.053 when the future Pope Victor III lived there together with other hermits. Pietro da Morrone, future Pope Celestino V, arrived there in 1,246 and restructured it by building, over the years, other rooms used for hermits that were added to the community. Subsequently, in the fourteenth century, Blessed Roberto di Salle stayed there while in the following centuries it experienced a slow decline until 1,586 when he obtained the title of Badia with the monk Pietro Santucci from Manfredonia who built the Holy staircase leading to the oratory of Santa Maria Maddalena. In the summer months, an afternoon mass is held on Sunday while forgiveness is celebrated on August 29 and those who confess and communicate the plenary indulgence. The Hermitage is located at about 1,130 m a.s.l. and can be reached by car following the directions from Roccamorice (PE).
